The Promise:
2 Chronicles 7:14
If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

1 Kings 18:37-39
37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again." 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, "The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!"

Zechariah 4:6  So he answered and said to me: "This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: 'Not by might nor by power,
but by My Spirit,' Says the Lord of hosts.

Joel 2:28-29 "And it shall come to pass afterward, That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your old men shall dream dreams, Your young men shall see visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

Fulfilled:
Acts 2:1-4
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Being Pentecostal is nothing new, just following the old paths, being filled with Holy Spirit and power for service that God has always given to those who ask.

"So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish?  12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?  13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!"
Luke 11:9-13
(NKJV)

At the Presbyterian Convention in Pittsburg, US (1st December 1858), in sessions discussing the need for a religious awakening and it's hinderances, ministers and elders present felt keenly:

"...the lack of unreserved consecration to the work of the Lord on the part of ministers, elders and Christian lay-men; the unwillingness on the part of churches to labour directly for the salvation of souls; ...conformity to the world and lack of a spirit of prayer amongst professors of religion; too close affinity with the things of the world..."

and to secure a revival, the following were noted:

"...self examination; repentance for sin; a vital faith in God's plan to save sinners and in His willingness so to do; persistent and importune prayer for an outpouring of the Spirit; education in the truths of the Bible; direct effort on the part of Christians to bring others under the influence of the gospel; the faithful and practical preaching of the truth with complete dependence on the sovereignty of free grace for every success."

"1. If there is some sin or sins in the past not confessed we cannot have the Spirit.  Therefore we must search, and ask the Spirit to search us

2. If there is something doubtful in our life, it must be removed - that is something of which we are unsure as to its being wrong or right.  This thing must be removed.

3. Total surrender to the Holy Spirit
We must do and say all He asks us.

4. Public confession of Christ

...These are the four things leading us to the grand blessing" - Evan Roberts

GET THE FLAME

"While the fire of God is falling,
while the voice of God is calling,
brothers get the flame.

While the torch of God is burning,
men's weak efforts overturning,
Christians get the flame.

While the Holy Ghost is pleading,
human methods superseding,
He himself the flame.

While the power hard hearts are bending,
yield thy own, to Him surrendering,
all to get the flame.

For the world at last is waking
and beneath His spell is breaking,
into living flame.

And our glorious Lord is seeking,
human hearts, to rouse sleeping,
fired with heavenly flame.

If in utter self-surrender,
you would work with Christ remember,
you must get the flame

For the sake of Christ in glory,
and the spreading of the story,
we must get the flame.

Oh my soul for thy refining,
and thy clearer, brighter shining,
Do not miss the flame

On the Holy Ghost relying,
Simply trusting and not trying
You will get the flame

Brothers let us cease our dreaming,
and while God's flood-tide is streaming
We will have the flame."

Poem quoted by Evan Roberts in "Message To The Churches" (Author unknown)
